Here is a cube measuring one meter on each side.
It has six identical surfaces, each surface area is one square meter (1m x 1m = 1m2).
You know that one meter is 100cm long, so each surface is also 100cm x 100cm = 10000cm2.
What have we figured out here?

We have figured out that 1m2 = 10000cm2.   This is called a "conversion factor".

We could do this for other units too... for example, 1m=10dm, so 1m2=100dm2.

How many mm2 are there in one square meter?
1000mm x 1000mm = 1000000mm2.

Now let's talk about volume...
The volume of the box is one cubic meter.  V=L*W*H, so is 1m*1m*1m=1m3.
