Sound is a compressional wave that travels through matter. It can travel through water and stones as well as through air. All you need to have sound is some medium for it to go through.
Can there be sound in space? No, because in space there is not enough matter to transmit sound. Remember that sound moves from place to place as particles bump into each other and tranfer their kinetic (motion) energy.
The speed of sound is typically given as 340m/s. I say typically
because sound can travel at various speeds. In substances that aren't
very dense (like air) sound travels relatively slowly. In dense substances
like metals, sound travels many times faster.
| medium | speed (meters/sec) |
| air | 340 |
| water | 1500 |
| aluminum | 5000 |
