RUBE GOLDBERG COMPETITION

A Rube Goldberg Device (RGD) can take many forms.  The idea came from a cartoon strip and has evolved into a widespread institution.

Our rules:
  • Each student will make a box on his/her own that links to two neighboring boxes
  • For grading, all boxes will be placed side by side and activated
  • The goal is to produce motion in the first box, which leads to the next box, and so on, eventually coming back to the original box
  • Each box must have at least 4 moving parts
  • Boxes may be of any practical size, but none may be elevated on legs
  • No electricity may be used
  • No student shall reach into their box to "help things along" once the chain reaction starts

  • PENALTIES:
One letter grade(10%) will be deducted for each of the following infractions...

  • having to reach into a box each time a hangup occurs
  • # of moving parts below 4
  • not completing a clean handoff to the next box
  • not accepting a clean handoff from the previous box
  • lack of part variety
